The Brillion Iron Works manufacturing plant will be closing by the year’s end and tomorrow marks day one of some major layoffs in Brillion.
About 340 layoffs are slated to begin at the Brillion Iron Works Friday morning. The plant is one of the major employers in the small town and businesses just down the road from the manufacturing plant are well aware of how the closing could impact the community.
"I know a lot of couples who work there and who have most of their lives. So I think that's really difficult because they don't have another income to depend on while they figure out what their next step is. I think the unknown is really scary for a lot of families," says Sue Knott the owner of Kreative Knotts a business in downtown Brillion.
"We need to pick up and go from there. As to what are we gonna do as a city, it certainly is a not a good thing, it's a blow for jobs," adds Mel Edinger of the Brillion City Council.
Metaldyne Performance Group which bought out Brillion Iron Works says they will be offering jobs to some employees at other sites of theirs across the Midwest, but none of those jobs are here in Wisconsin.
