Hales Corners native John Hirsch is reacting to a supreme court ruling Monday that allows states to keep already existing gun control laws in place in each state.
"I think that the states can do a fine job taking care of the laws regarding assault rifles and other weaponry," Hirsch said.
Hirsch agrees with the supreme court's decision to keep states' rules regarding gun ownership the same, but he would like to see Wisconsin leaders do something more.
Democratic Senator Tammy Baldwin released a statement today requesting more action when it comes to gun laws.
“The decision by our highest Court doesn’t change the fact that Congress can and should act to do more to save lives from gun violence. I support closing the terror gap by giving the FBI the authority to block the sale of weapons to potential terrorists on the no fly list and terrorism watch list. I also believe we should prevent hate crime convicts from buying guns. And at a time when there is easy access to weapons of war, I also believe we need to strengthen background checks to cover gun shows and online gun sales. Congress must act to prevent the easy access of weapons for those that shouldn't have them.”
Republican Lieutenant Governor Rebecca Kleefisch on the other hand sees the ruling as a victory for gun owners.
"For those who care deeply about our second amendment," Kleefisch said. "I think that this was a victory for those hunters who choose to hunt with AR's."
Following the mass shooting in Orlando, the two-side debate on gun control is getting a lot more attention from communities and lawmakers.
