APPLETON -- It's the first day back for students at Lawrence University in Appleton But for many its more than just school work on their mind -- that's because before break students came together with a list of demands to curbing racism and creating diversity
President Mark Burstein of Lawrence University says he takes student's request very seriously.
"There really is a conversation going on around the country and really around the world about race race and identity." He continue saying the educational environment is the perfect place for those discussions.
Now Lawrence University is joining that discussion.
"Trying to create forums and give us all tools to have conversations about controversial issues -- that's what a college education is all about" Says Burstein
Over the weekend, President Burstein shared plans for improvement in an open letter -- including new positions to be added dealing with diversity and also a faulty position to teach about other ethnicites.
"We really try to create an environment where every student can thrive" says Burstein.
