Kewaunee County busy cleaning up after flooding

AHNAPEE, Wis.- It's long hours for members of the Kewaunee County Highway Department after about four and a half inches of rain saturates the ground in just 36 hours.

Jamie Thayes operates heavy machinery for the department, but Tuesday's work was a little unusual.

"There was some swirling that went on here with so much water coming through here that it just swirled to the point in this area right here that it took the shoulder out," said Thayes.

The water receding now, but it had risen an estimated 3 to 4 feet Monday afternoon.

"You know it's dangerous working here, it's really steep around here and it's slippery, you got overhead wires," explained Thayes.

Water was also overflowing in the river banks in the county.

"We had to take or remove the debris that was blocking the bridge, it's restricting the flow of water," said Kewaunee highway patrol superintendent, Joe Dax.

The water was moving so fast it even pushed a dock up in the air.  That movement is making it hard for crews to clear debris, some is even stuck until the water goes down.

"There are other bridges we are looking at with debris blocking it," said Dax.

The Kewaunee Highway Department says as of Monday night, 8 roads had been flooded with water and 2 had to be closed down.  All roads were re-opened early Tuesday morning.
