Keeping kids safe on playground equipment

Each year, thousands of children and young teens are treated in emergency rooms for playground-related injuries.

Children love to monkey around, but monkey bars and other climbing equipment cause more injuries to kids than anything else on the playground.

Kids are kids and they will fall, so experts say playgrounds that have soft material under them such as wood chips, sand or mulch are safest.

Jennifer Hoekstra of Helen DeVos Children's Hospital says, "Take a scope of that playground before you let your children play. Look for any broken or damaged equipment because those rough edges or rusty slide stairs could cause a serious injury to your children."

Other tips include teaching children the safe way to walk around the swings and to wear proper footwear.
