GREEN BAY, WI -- A group pushing for alternatives to a proposed Brown Co. Jail expansion are holding a "sit-in" at Wednesday night's County Board meeting.
Sheriff John Gossage is set to give a presentation to the Board on overcrowding at the jail.
But leaders of JOSHUA, or "Justice Organization Sharing Hope United for Action," say there are alternatives to a $14 million expansion.
Those alternatives include improving drug treatment programs for non-violent offenders.
"Those could be expanded. It would cost less," explains Marian Boyle Rohloff, of JOSHUA, "money could be funneled into that, and help people get back into the community.. and get the treatment they need, and reduce the jail population."
Officials say housing and transporting overflow inmates could cost hundreds of thousand of dollars next year alone if not addressed.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Gossage says he has no official stance on the proposed expansion, but wants the County to have all the latest information.
