Johnson-Feingold spar over Tomah VA

The race between Russ Feingold and Ron Johnson for the U.S. Senate seat has heated up after the two sides traded attack advertisements this week.

A few days ago, the super-PAC Freedom Partners Action Fund released a TV ad supporting incumbent Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin). It accused Russ Feingold of receiving and ignoring a memo in 2009 that described concerns and problems at the Tomah VA.

On Thursday, Feingold told NBC26 that the advertisement is not true. "This memo never came to our office," said Feingold. "This is a fraudulent claim. Frankly, Senator Johnson here is acting like the ultimate insider politician."

Feingold released an advertisement in response, saying Senator Johnson did nothing when he learned of the Tomah VA complaints and said his staff was distracted during an election year.

The Republican Party of Wisconsin has responded to Feingold's ad, releasing the following statement:

"Senator Feingold has repeatedly stood on the wrong side of veterans and dodged responsibility for his failure to take action in the tragic situation in Tomah. He can create excuses and blame others to protect his political career, but Feingold can't escape the fact that for years hie ignored a whistleblower's cry for help when our veterans needed him."

At this time, we have not received Senator Johnson's response to the new ad.
