Jaguar shot dead after posing with Olympic torch

Posted
Manaus, Brazil -- A jaguar native to the Amazon region was shot dead as it escaped its pen in Brazil Monday, shortly after it posed for photographs with the Olympic torch.

The eight-year-old animal, named Juma, was first shot with tranquilizers as she escaped her pen.

She then went on to attack a military official, at which point she was shot with a pistol.

Veterinarians tried to rescue the jaguar, but she died at the site of the shooting.

The Amazonian Environmental Protection Institute is investigating the incident.

The jaguar had just posed for photos with the Olympic torch, as part of its tour through Brazil.

The torch will be carried by some 12-thousand people in 335 cities up until the August 5 opening ceremony in Rio.
