(KWWL) Police in Dubuque, Iowa are investigating a suspicious fire as a hate crime.

Police believe two crosses were burned between 4 and 5 a.m Wednesday morning.

This is not the first time Dubuque has dealt with cross burnings.

The city gained national attention in the late 1980s and early 1990s when a rash of cross burnings highlighted racial tension in the area.

Leaders now are hoping history doesn't repeat itself.

"In the years since, our city, our law enforcement, and many organizations in this community, have been actively engaged in creating a community, where all people can feel welcome, safe and respected," Mayor Roy Buol said.
