Many spearers were pulling their shacks off of Lake Winnebago, just three days into the sturgeon spearing season because they're worried for their safety as the ice begins to melt.
Spearers say the ice is becoming thin in some spots and according to local fishing clubs much of the shoreline is already cracking. Those cracks are making it difficult for people to get out on the lake.
"It's taken so much abuse between the warm temperatures and the traffic that's been on the lake so it's very fractured and very brittle," explained West Shore Fishing Club president, Steve Klein.
Members of area fishing clubs along Lake Winnebago say the conditions are changing every hour and they predict by as early as Wednesday the lake will only be safe for four-wheelers.
