Packers fans were out in full force Thursday morning to get Lambeau field ready for Sunday's showdown against the Vikings. Hundreds of shovelers tackled the stadium bowl to get rid of the nearly foot of snow that fell on Monday. It's much more than just hard work though, it has become a tradition unmatched in the NFL.
The congregation began at 2am at Lambeau field. And no, the hundreds in line are not waiting for tickets, they're lining up for an insiders scoop on a Packers tradition.
"It's awesome. It's something I never thought I'd be able to come out and do. It's kind fun being out here. Yeah shoveling is work, but it's fun," says Travis Brandt of New London who has only been to Lambeau field a couple of times before today.
Typically a couple times a year the Packers will make the request to fans to help with the heavy lifting.
More than 800 people shoveling are in place and all are getting paid 10 bucks an hour for their hard work. It’s all in an effort to make the stadium safe before the masses arrive on Sunday.
"We want to make it a safe environment and want people’s energy focused on the field supporting the team. Not worried about where they are walking or if their standing in snow. So we need to get everything ready for Sunday night," says Packers Director of Public Affairs Aaron Popkey.
"It's a whole lot of dedication from our fans. That's basically what it is. They come out here to work for their football team. It's kinda fun," adds Brandt.
So if you are one of the fortunate ones who will be in one of the seats come Sunday, you have these shoveling buddies to thank for warming your spot up for you.
The Packers are once again looking for more shovelers Friday morning. It starts at 8am and pays 10 dollars an hour. You have to be 15-years-old to participate and everyone will meet in front of the Mill Fleet Farm gate.
