The first confirmed case of someone contracting the West Nile virus in Brown County has been reported according to Brown County Health and Human Services. Back in July, they announced the first bird case of the mosquito borne virus in the county.
Health officials are urging residents to protect themselves by wearing insect repellant, limit time spent outside at dawn and dusk, properly dispose of items that hold water, and make sure window and door screen are in good condition.
Some of the symptoms of West Nile virus include fever, headache, and a rash that lasts a few days. They usually develop between three to 15 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito. More severe symptoms include muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, convulsions, paralysis, and coma.
Call your doctor if you think you may have contracted the virus.
