Hortonville Hardware works overtime during storm

The powerful storms this weekend knocked out power to much of the area with WPS reporting 21,000 people without power at one point.

Hortonville was no exception with power out to most of the town. In those times, items like a generator or a sump pump can be crucial for a family or anyone during a storm.

Brick's Hortonville Hardware is the only hardware store between New London and Appleton and the only place many of those necessary items are accessible. So even when the power was out to Brick's itself, the family-owned business made it their mission to make sure people had what they needed.

It started with a Facebook post and ended up with owner Kay Brick actually making stops at some of her customer's homes. Employees at the store also used flashlights to help customers get around the store and purchase generators.

In addition to offering to stay open late, Brick's opened at 5AM today to continue making their stock available for people cleaning up after the storm.

"The least we can do is reach out to them when they're in need, and it's always nice to be able to help somebody else," Kay Brick said.

Store manager and owner's daughter Jana Schabow says being able to help out the people who make up the customers of their communities is very rewarding. They've been happy to be able to help people with all their projects since opening in April of last year. Residents of Hortonville had previously said having a store with tools and supplies should be a main priority for the town.

WIth the Brick's, it sounds like they got much more than just a hardware store. As Kay Brick describes it:

"It's like a family here, Hortonville is like a family."
