Today law enforcement paused to remember a fallen officer who was killed on duty five years ago.
Fond du Lac Police Officer Craig Birkholz was fatally shot while responding to an emergency call. Another officer and a K9 unit were also hit. They both survived.
This morning the Holy Family Church in Fond du Lac released 67 blue balloons for his badge number 67.
Officer Birkholz was also a military veteran and leaves behind a wife, Ashley.
A memorial fund has been set up in honor of Officer Birkholz that awards scholarships to individuals interested in pursuing a career in Law Enforcement. A bike ride challenge also benefits the fund every year. You can learn more about participating here.
