Hitting the roads for 4th of July travel will cost less this year

Posted

Even if your plans are in place to take advantage of the long, July 4th holiday weekend, there's something you need to know that could change how you get there.

Gas prices are about 5 cents a gallon lower than last year. Gas isn't the only thing travelers will find cheaper this year. Airfares are down 10% and rental cars are 14% less.

AAA's Tamra Johnson says that's why they're predicting a record year for getaways around the 4th of July.

"It's going to be a historical day, year for travel for Independence Day.. we are expecting about 44 million Americans will be traveling this holiday season." said Johnson.

37 million of those will be driving, taking full advantage of cheaper travel this year. So, roads and highways are likely to look like rush hour, instead of a holiday.

AAA measures the long, holiday weekend as being a full five days, starting Friday and running through next Tuesday.
