Helping Children Cope with Grief

Posted
After a 12-year-old boy was hit and killed by a school bus in Kaukauna Tuesday, we asked a therapist how parents should talk to their children about grief and loss.

Whitney Stager, a licensed marriage and family therapist explained some children are helped by doing something to express their feelings, like leaving a note at memorials.

Most importantly, every child is different, so parents need to listen to their kids.

"There's not necessarily a right answer for this,” said Whitney Stager. “I think just being patient with yourself.  For parents who are going through some trauma, to be easy on yourself and also just kind of follow your kid's lead and make sure they know you're there for them, and that you're listening."

In Kaukauna, the school district says they are providing counselors, psychologists and social workers for as long as the children need them.
