Harbor House in Appleton broke ground Wednesday on an expansion to help more victims of domestic abuse.

Donors, staff and volunteers of Harbor House celebrated raising more than $4 million for their Building Hope campaign, which will increase their bed space and add an exam room, amongst other projects, to improve their trauma-informed care services.

"I think it's important for people to know it's more than just a shelter," said Appleton Mayor Tim Hanna. "It's the programming, it's the education, it's the raising awareness. The best thing that could happen would be that there would be no need, but we know there's always going to be a need."

Harbor House has helped domestic abuse victims in Outagamie and Calumet counties for 33 years.
