Gun deer season begins in Wisconsin

The gun deer season started Saturday in Wisconsin, and thousands of hunters across the state sported their blaze orange and waited in deer stands for that trophy buck.

For Chris Heike of De Pere, it was a successful opening day as he shot a 6 point buck.

"This one's probably one of the biggest one's I've shot," Heike said. "About 11:30 this one came by with a couple others and I took a shot and got it."

Nearby at Rocky Top Tavern in Greenleaf, not everyone was having as much luck.

"Unfortunately we didn't get to get any deer just yet but we're heading back out to give it a try," said Eric Laurent of Appleton.

Rocky Top Tavern is a deer registration station, but it's not as busy as year's past according to owner Connie Leon.

"Online registration has taken away from the camaraderie of the tradition," said Leon.

Fewer hunters have come in to talk and admire the deer since online registration started last year, she said.

"It gets the people together, people that can't or don't hunt anymore, they at least get to be a part of it," said Leon.

However, the DNR says online registration makes it easier for hunters.

But before they can worry about registering it, they need to find their trophy buck.

"Hopefully changes tonight, it was a little slower during the day, but it should change tonight," said Steve Van Deurzen of Little Chute. "See if we can get the big one."

You can still register your deer at a deer registration station if you don't want to do so online. For a list of those, visit the DNR website here.
