Green Bay School Board moving forward with security grant

Posted

After months of surveys and meetings with the public and staff members, leaders with the Green Bay Area Public School District say they feel confident their schools will be one step closer to improving safety.

"We put a lot of work into it and if we could get the funding and put these things into place, it's going to make our buildings that much more hard for people to get into,” said Chris Collar, Safety & Security Coordinator.

The district is asking eight hundred thousand dollars of grant money.

They say it'll go towards enhancing building security, such as equipment to make windows shatter resistant, more cameras, walkie talkies, and trauma training for staff members.

School officials say, with the recent shooting in Texas, they're making the right move.

"Whatever we can do to make it more difficult for anyone to come in our building, whatever we can do, so we can have the ability to alert people as quickly as possible to save lives is what we need to do,” said Collar.

According to the district, the grant money can't go towards hiring armed security guards.

We've spoken with members of the board and district who say most parents don’t favor armed officers.

We spoke with some parents who are on board with the idea.

"I think that would help in that kind of situation. If they know someone is there, that would definitely deter some of the activity,” said Laura Inda.

The deadline to apply is June 8th.
