Green Bay Police are warning of a man posing as a Water Department worker who stole money from an elderly woman.

On May 31 around 10:00 a.m., a 90-year-old woman on Green Bay's west side called police to report a man had come to her door claiming to be a Water Department worker.

The man allegedly told the woman there was a water main leak in the neighborhood. The woman, who lives alone, let him into her house, police said.

The man told her to remove items from under her sink and leave the water running, according to police. While she did that, the man walked around her home and stole an undisclosed amount of money. He left while she was not looking, police said.

The Green Bay Police Department wants to alert the community of this scam and to protect residents from falling victim to this crime.

Police are reminding everyone to do the following:

  • Know your neighbors and watch out for one another.
  • Report suspicious activity in your neighborhoods. If you see people acting suspiciously, call your local law enforcement agency.
  • If you have elderly relatives please check up on them and communicate that these types of scams are out there.
  • If a worker arrives at your home they should have identification to include a business card and a telephone number of a supervisor who can verify why they are there.

The case is still under investigation.

If you have any information, contact Green Bay Police at (920) 448-3208 or call Crime Stopper at (920) 432-STOP.
