Green Bay Police are calling the death of a 16-month old child "possibly the worst case of child abuse" they've ever seen.

Police had been investigating the child's death since May 25, when the toddler was brought to a Green Bay hospital and was already dead.

Autopsy results showed the child suffered from extreme and repeated physical abuse and neglect, including severe bruising, according to Capt. Kevin Warych with Green Bay Police.

"In speaking with investigators, they said this was possibly the worst case of child abuse they've ever seen," said Capt. Warych.

After police conducted interviews, they arrested and recommended charges of First Degree Reckless Homicide against the boyfriend of the child's mother.

Investigators have still not determined a cause of death.

"When a baby is a victim of a crime, who has no defense, it really affects all of us," said Capt. Warych.

Charges may also be referred against the baby's mother at a later date.

NBC26 is choosing not to name the man until he's been formally charged.
