Police say Thursday, just after midnight, they got a call about people breaking into cars in the 800 block of Waverly Place. Officers found the two men in the 1700 block of 11th Avenue. Officers then set up a perimeter and called K-9 Specialist Reetz and his canine Vilak to the scene. Vilak was able to follow the scent trail of the males that were running from officers and officers were able to take the two suspects into custody without further incident.

One of the men was a juvenile, the other a 20-year-old man.

Police say most thefts are crimes of opportunity, with thieves looking for the easiest targets. Capt. Florence said that was the case in this incident.

“They lift the door handles to make sure the car is unlocked and if the car is unlocked, they go in take whatever they can. A lot of times, they're taking small items, change and money or purses or any kind electronics left behind,” said Capt. Brad Florence with Green Bay Police.

Police remind you to remove valuables, especially portable electronics and money from your vehicle or place them in the trunk. If possible, park your car in a locked garage.

According to police, they were able to solve this case with the help of a citizen who contacted police while the incident was ongoing. They say this case demonstrates how important it can be to contact the police when you see suspicious persons or activity.
