They don't always hit the mark, but that's not necessarily the focus at the Oconto River Bowmen youth introduction to archery program.

"Kids are the future," said Eric Thomas, Oconto River Bowmen Board of Directors. "We want to get them into the sport, understand the sport, learn the sport, and enjoy it so that they continue to come out and support the club and grow the sport of archery."

Each summer, the Oconto River Bowmen Archery Club welcomes kids to learn more about archery.

"It gets them out of the house, gets them out from playing the video games," said Thomas. "Just allows them to have fun outside."

The instructors focus on teaching basic bow and arrow skills.

"Number one is safety," said Thomas. "That's a huge aspect of us. We want them to be safe when they come out. We want them to be safe when they go home and they do it at home."

The youth program is always a hit, especially with parents.

"We come here a lot in the summer and in the wintertime we go to an indoor range," said Beth Sconzert, whose children participate in the program. "It gives them something to do. No video games!"

The goal is to get kids involved and hopefully give them a lifelong love of the sport.
