Great Outdoors: Annual Ultralight Day brings pilots together to show off skills

Posted

Each year, ultralight pilots and enthusiasts head to EAA's Pioneer Airport in Oshkosh for the annual Ultralight Day.

It's a time for pilots to show off their flying skills through pilot proficiency tests including accuracy landings, bean bag drops and torpedo run contests.

"Looking out ahead of me for other aircraft, birds, farmers in the field, at houses and rivers and things like that, I consider this my motorcycle in the sky," said Timm Bogenhagen, Senior Aviation Specialist and head of Ultralight Programs at the EAA. "It's a lot like a motorcycle to me, but you're 3 dimensional. And that's what's really different about an aircraft, you're working in 3 dimensions whereas on the ground it's two dimensions."
