APPLETON – A recently passed bill could cost Planned Parenthood it’s Federal Funding in Wisconsin. When asked whether he would sign the bill, Governor Walker says ”It's disgusting to think that people would make money off of selling fetal body parts “
He’s in favor of diverting the funds to “Other areas in women's health noncontroversial areas” he says
But leaders at Planned Parenthood disagree saying federal grant money doesn't go to abortions. “Its only for preventative healthcare access to birth control or education the things that prevent people from needed abortions” Says Nicole Safar. She’s the Government Relations Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates in Wisconsin.
“For some women planned parenthood is the only place they can go for affordable care and no one else is stepping in to fill that gap” she continues.
This isn't the only time planned parenthood has been faced with cuts in 2011 the state cut its funding, forcing Planned Parenthood to cut 5 rural center, including one in Shawno. Now women have to travel to Green Bay for comparable healthcare.
Safar questions the Governors motives in this defunding campaign. “Its very political… the state has been really consistent with putting up blocks to birth control”
If signed into law, this bill will allow the state of Wisconsin to compete for federal funds for Title X Grants.
But Safar says this will curb women’s access to healthcare. “The state has no infrastructure no plans on building infrastructure where patients can go and access the care”
As for now planned parenthood is funded until 2018, meaning the next president will have the final say as to who gets that money. If signed the federal government will control the allotment for the funds in Wisconsin in 2018.
