Ten officers with the Green Bay Police Department have completed equestrian training to form a mounted police force in the city.
According to Mayor Jim Schmitt, the goal of the specialized unit is to provide high visibility patrol and crime suppression throughout the city, be visible in the community at community events and strengthen community policing efforts, showcase the department and the officers' relationships with the community, and build relationships with community youth, as horses are a way to get the public to approach the officers and engage in conversation.
They Mayor's office plans an afternoon news conference to discuss the new unit.
