A Fond du Lac man will spend nearly 30 years behind bars for sexually assaulting his girlfriend's children's babysitter starting when she was just 11 years old.
Jose Veliz, 42, was sentenced Wednesday to 28 years in prison and 17 years of probation for abusing the girl. He is ordered to have no contact with the victim and to stay sober.
Veliz pleaded no contest in March to five felony charges: repeated sexual assault of a child, sexual assault of a child under 16, felony intimidation of a witness and two counts of child enticement.
According to a criminal complaint, the girl went to police in 2016 at the age of 14 and told officers Veliz had started having sexual intercourse with her when she was 11 in 2013.
The girl babysat Veliz's girlfriend's children. She told police the abuse started with Veliz touching and rubbing her arms and back when she would babysit, court documents said.
The girl told police Veliz had sex with her 30-40 times over the course of the abuse.
According to court documents, the victim said Veliz would threaten her, saying if she told anyone about the assaults, he would hurt her, her mom or the children she babysat.
Veliz is not eligible for early release.
