The Fond du Lac Police Department says a man from Sunday’s near drowning incident has died. Forty-seven year old Daniel J Thompson of Fond du Lac was pronounced deceased at St. Agnes Hospital Tuesday afternoon

Police say the incident happened on Sunday afternoon in the “Big Hole” area of the Fond du Lac Marina near the Fond du Lac Yacht Club.

Witnesses told police that Thompson had been on shore operating a remote controlled boat in the marina area when the boat lost power.  Police say Thompson swam out to retrieve the boat, but that the boat continued to be pushed further away due to the winds and current, causing him to turn around and swim back to shore when he went under.

Witnesses were able to pull Thompson from the water where a bystander began to do CPR.  A Fond du Lac Police Officer and Fond du Lac Fire/Rescue continued CPR. Thompson was transported to St. Agnes Hospital in critical condition. Thompson was pronounced dead on Tuesday.

An autopsy by the Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner’s Office determined the preliminary cause of death to be consistent with fresh water drowning.
