An increase in shootings across the nation has first responders assessing the risks they take each time they are called to a scene.
Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue recently purchased 25 sets of bulletproof vests and helmets for their fire rescue personnel. That's enough to outfit an entire shift at a time. Now they will have that extra layer of protection in dangerous situations like active shooters.
This added security is a life-saving measure for paramedics. Working with law enforcement, now paramedics could potentially get to a wounded patient even sooner instead of waiting for the scene to be cleared.
It is a risky maneuver for the rescue teams, but it also means getting to possible shooting victims faster and getting them away from the scene and to a hospital.
Assistant Chief EMS at Fond du Lac Fire and Rescue Todd Janquart says it can be a tough idea to swallow but fire departments and medical response teams need to recognize the risk they face with the increase of violence like shootings.
The ballistic equipment will not be used on a daily basis but rather stored in ambulances and other vehicles only to be used in a dangerous emergency situation.
Each vest weighs in just under 25 lbs, but firefighters say the extra gear is nothing if it means life-saving protection.
