Flooded rivers in Kewaunee Co. closing roads

Posted

LUXEMBURG, WI -- There are concerns in Kewaunee County, tonight, where rain-swollen rivers are spilling out onto highways, forcing them to close along certain stretches.

Drivers are advised to keep their cars off flooded sections of road to stay safe.

Tonight, highway crews in several Northeast Wisconsin counties are monitoring flooded sections of roads, stressing that any road closures are out of public safety, and need to be obeyed.

As day turns to night in Luxemburg, continued flooding along the Kewaunee River has closed low-lying sections of highways AB and K.

"It's always in the spring you always have flooding," says Casco resident Lynn Brcau, in disbelief, "yeah, this is strange."

Flooding is forcing many of the families attending the holiday concert at Luxemburg-Casco High School to find a different route there.

"We planned our route, and made it here safely," says Brcau.

Brcau says the school district worked throughout the day to keep parents informed of road closures through social media.

"I got messages over my phone," says Brcau, "so that was kind of helpful in knowing where not to go."

Meanwhile, at Kewaunee County Highway Department headquarters, tonight is about damage control, and keeping people alive and away from flooded roadways.

"Where it's really fast flooding over the top, you can lose your shoulders, and the road can actually wash away," says operator Jamie Thayse, "and you can't see it in this muddy water. So, that's the biggest risk you take.

Tonight is all about staying ahead of the flood water on roads, and highways, for emergency crews.

Tomorrow, highway crews say they'll start with clean up, and repairs where needed.
