Winnebago County Sheriff Deputies say two fishermen were rescued after winds caused ice shoves.

Two fishermen noticed ice shoves near their shack off of Noffke's boat ramp in the Town of Poygan preventing them from getting off the ice.

They called 911 and sheriff deputies along with the Winnebago-Poygan fire department used an air boat to recover them.

“They were very well prepared. They were ready for the weather. It was the unpredictability of the ice," says Lt. Joe Kroncke. Sheriff Deputies are now urging anglers to use caution.

Kroncke says this serves as a reminder of unsafe ice. Ice reports on Facebook show a crack has opened on the south shore of lake poygan.

“I know there's several blogs that have been active this morning as far as ice conditions on both Poygan and Winnebago. They have the most up to date information," says Kroncke.

Kroncke says it's crucial to check with bait shops on ice conditions as well.
