Green Bay firefighters spent early Wednesday morning battling a chimney fire.

Crews were called to a home in the 800 block of Gross Lane around 1:30 a.m.

When NBC26 arrived, visible flames could be seen coming from the roof. Crews were quickly able to stop the fire from spreading by cutting holes in the roof.

The Green Bay Metro fire chief says the fire started in the wood burning fireplace.

Only one person lived at the home and he was able to get out safely.

Damage estimates came in at $30,000.

The fire is under investigation.

The Green Bay Metro Fire Department is reminding folks to have their chimneys professionally cleaned and inspected before Winter.
