Fond du Lac Fire Rescue report they were called to a home today around 6:45 PM where smoke could be seen at 432 Walker Street.
A single person living at the home was able to get out safely without any injuries. That fire caused significant damage to the home and firefighters were hindered by large amounts of debris inside the home.
The cause is still under investigation.
There were no working smoke alarms at the time, and now fire officials are impressing the importance of having working alarms in every home.
Fond du Lac Fire Chief Peter O'Leary says this fire could have been much worse if the person living here had been asleep at the time.
Tomorrow, Fond du Lac firefighters will be canvassing the neighborhood to hand out free fire safety information and provide free home fire safety checks.
