Fire Department: Cigarette butts caused Ripon apartment fire

Careless use of smoking materials caused a Ripon apartment fire Monday that displaced 14 people, according to the Ripon Fire Department.

Someone put cigarette butts in a plastic container on a second floor balcony at the Valley Crest Apartments, resulting in the fire, the department said. The fire went up the wall and destroyed part of the roof.

One person was taken to the hospital because of the fire.
