Final request issued for help identify Private Water Service Line material

Green Bay Water Utility is issuing a final request for help identifying the Private Water Service Line material used in 1,900 city homes.

Homeowners will receive a third and final postcard this week alerting them that the material of their Private Water Service Line is unknown and that there is a possibility that their pipe could be made of lead.

The postcards include directions for identifying the material of the home's Private Water Service Line, along with instructions on how to report findings to the Green Bay Water Utility.

The identified homeowners are asked to take an online survey or call 920-785-7910 to report their findings by December 15.

The request stems from Green Bay's new General Ordinance 21.11 that requires all homes with lead water service lines to be replaced. Green Bay Water Utility states that this ordinance does not affect internal plumbing.

If homeowners discover their Private Water Service Lines are lead, they may be eligible to have them replaced at no cost.

"“While we currently have funding available to cover 100% of the fee to replace Private Water Service Lines made of lead, we do not know how much longer these funds will be available, and we do not want affected homeowners to miss out on this opportunity,” said Nancy Quirk, general manager of Green Bay Water Utility.

“That’s why it is extremely important that these homeowners identify the material of their Private Water Service Lines and report the findings back to us as soon as possible, even if the material is not lead,” Quirk explained.

In October, Green Bay Water Utility initially notified 2,182 city homes where Private Water Service Lines were installed prior to 1945, the year Green Bay stopped installing lead water service lines.

Since then, only 282 homeowners have identified and reported the material of their home's Private Water Service Line. Only 5 of those lines have been confirmed as being lead.

Green Bay Water Utility has created brochures in English, Spanish and Hmong with pictorial directions for identifying the Private Water Service Line material. You can download these brochures by clicking here.
