Howard man decides to move Confederate flag indoors

A Confederate flag flying in Howard raised some eyebrows Tuesday, but the family who put the flag up said it's just about honoring their Southern heritage.

The flag belongs to Wade Thompson, who is from Georgia.

To him, the flag has nothing to do with race, he said. Instead, it's about a rebellious nature, he told NBC26.

Some neighbors who didn't want to go on camera to avoid causing issues in their neighborhood said they were disappointed by the flag. Some said it has no place in modern America.

However, others said Thompson has a right to fly whatever flag he wants.

"They do what they want, I do what I want," said Dolored Process. "If they want to fly the Confederate flag, that's their business. If I fly the American flag, that's fine."

After speaking with some of his neighbors, Thompson decided to take the flag down.

Thompson says he put the flag up as a way to contradict how many of the racist groups protesting in Charlottesville used the symbol.

"The guys down south that are the skinheads and the knucklehead white supremacists and the alt-right and all of those guys haven't learned that lesson. There's not a supreme race. It doesn't exist," said Thompson.

Thompson says he doesn't display the confederate flag next to the American flag because he has much more respect for the latter. He says he'll put the Confederate flag inside and display it on his wall.
