More than a dozen trained American Red Cross first responders from Wisconsin are already in Texas and 13 more left Friday in response to Hurricane Harvey.
Jerry Fennel, one of the volunteers, caught a flight to Houston from Milwaukee Friday morning.
Fennel said he brought a backpack with two days worth of clothes and a toothbrush even though he could be helping for weeks.
"I try to go very light," Fennel said. "We move around a lot and sometimes we live in the shelters with the storm victims."
After Hurricane Harvey passes, Fennel said Red Cross volunteers will help people impacted by rain and flooding at shelters.
They will also give them one-on-one counseling as they recover.
