Department of Corrections statement on safety

There are growing concerns over safety in state prisons after an inmate, accused of attacking two prison employees,  died at Green Bay Correctional Institution earlier this week. It's the second inmate attack at GBCI that sent employees to the hospital in less than a year.

"These attacks are happening way too often and we have to make sure that they're secure in the workplace," said state Senator Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay).

NBC26 went to Madison Wednesday to talk to the Department of Corrections about safety concerns in state prisons for both workers and inmates. While DOC leaders could not speak on camera, they did send a written statement that is below.

However, with understaffed and overcrowded prisons, legislators believe more can be done.

"Men and women of corrections need to be at the table to discuss issues of safety," said Senator Hansen.

Below is the full statement from the Department of Corrections:

DOC is committed to the safety and security of staff, inmates, and visitors at DOC facilities. Following a significant incident, DOC conducts a review of the incident and DOC’s response to determine how the department can continue to enhance its policies, procedures, and practices.

DOC announced a new pay system for correctional officers and sergeants in May that has permanently increased correctional officer and sergeant pay by $.0.80 per hour, with an additional $0.50 per hour add-on until early 2017. DOC is continuing to identify and implement creative solutions to increase recruitment of correctional officers and sergeants.
