Hunters respond to CWD recommendations

An advisory committee is recommending a statewide ban on baiting and feeding to keep CWD from spreading.

Every five years, the DNR reviews its 15-year Chronic Wasting Disease Plan.

Members of the DNR say if a state-wide baiting ban is put into place, fewer wild deer will congregate in one spot, reducing their chances of spreading the disease.

Some hunters we spoke with say a baiting ban will make hunting less fun.

"I think you got to work harder, scout more to actually see deer. I think a lot of things, you know, even bringing my kid hunting, if he doesn't see deer, he gets discouraged," said Mike Mashl.

The DNR says there's more to enjoying the hunt than just bagging a deer.

"You can reflect back on tradition and experiences with your friend and family members in deer camp and celebrating the success of the harvest and stories that go along with it, "said Bob Nack, Wisconsin Dept. of Natural Resources

These are only recommendations. Nothing has been set in stone.

The revisions will be shared with the Natural Resources Board on March 1st.
