The Sheboygan Police Department has determined the death of the child was accidental. The investigation revealed that the victim was napping in a portable crib and was found to have climbed out of the crib and suffocated after becoming entangled in cords attached to window blinds on a window in the room.

The caregiver reported that she cares for her own children and other children on a daily basis. The home is not a licensed daycare. The investigation has been referred to Sheboygan County Health and Human Services and the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families.

At the conclusion of the investigation, the case will be reviewed with the Sheboygan County District Attorney's Office.

The victim's family and caregiver have a relationship beyond the childcare services. Police ask that the public keep in mind the traumatic experience both are going through at this time and respect their privacy. Police share the thoughts and prayers of the entire Sheboygan Community with them.

Police also recognize the danger to young children of certain window blinds, and ask that others use this tragedy as an opportunity to safeguard homes and businesses.
