Local health departments are urging you to test your home right now during Radon Awareness Month. The odorless, invisible, radioactive gas can enter homes through cracks in the foundation. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.
To protect you from the risk, the De Pere Health Department is offering free radon testing kits while supplies last.
"It's important to test during the winter months because windows are closed, so the highest level would be detected during this time of year," explains Director Chrystal Woller.
If your home has elevated levels of radon gas, the health department will connect you with local experts to fix the problem.
