Wisconsin reports 2,319 new COVID-19 cases Wednesday, 16 new deaths

MADISON (NBC 26) -- Coronavirus numbers continue to climb in Wisconsin, with state health officials reporting 2,319 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

The state total number of confirmed coronavirus cases is now at 138,698, with 80.6% of those cases listed as recovered.

Wisconsin DHS also report 16 new deaths, raising the death toll to 1,415 in Wisconsin. The number of people ever hospitalized due to COVID-19 is now 7,951, an increase of 141.

These new numbers come as health officials announced Wednesday that a field hospital is opening in the coming days at the state fairgrounds near Milwaukee as a surge in COVID-19 cases threatens to overwhelm hospitals.

Wisconsin has become a hot spot for the disease over the last month, ranking third nationwide this week in daily new cases per capita.
