LUXEMBURG (NBC 26) - Kewaunee County reported its first death from coronavirus Monday; a man well-known among the Luxemburg community.

If you had a question about anything in the village, Jerry Simonar was the guy to go to. Even the Chamber of Commerce called him the “Mayor of South Luxemburg” when he was named Person of the Year in 2018.

“A very caring and well-known person around Luxemburg and throughout Kewaunee County, and probably Brown County,” said his youngest son Dale. “He had a high impact with a lot of people he had met throughout his life.”

Jerry, a Korean War veteran in his late 80's, passed away Monday from the coronavirus. He is the first coronavirus death in Kewaunee County. Dale said it’s been tough on everybody.

“I just wish this virus would go away soon. It’s causing a lot of havoc not just for our family, but for lots of people, and it’s very hard to swallow that.”

Known as a passionate guy, Dale said his dad was the last living of all of his brothers; and his memory will live on through the Luxemburg community.

“There’s so many with my dad, our trap shooting together, our time out at the farm making maple syrup, I could go on and on,” he said. “Jerry’s been here for his family forever.”

Dale added his dad and mom, Carol, have been married for over 60 years. Jerry was 87-years-old.
