MANITOWOC COUNTY (NBC 26) -- A gift card scam recently targeted people in Manitowoc County working remotely from home, the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office said Friday.
The Sheriff's Office said victims working from home received an email from a person they believed to be their supervisor asking them to buy $100 gift cards. Victims were then told to expose the codes on the back of the cards and send pictures of the cards to their supervisor.
The Sheriff's Office is advising people to confirm email addresses and call the person requesting the information to make sure it's legitimate.
Scammers have recently become more active in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and are trying to exploit the situation, the Sheriff's Office said. Current scams involve fake cures, vaccines and supplies.
