The New York Times compiled a list of 20 cities with the fastest increase of COVID-19 cases. Eight of them are in Wisconsin.
While monitoring the coronavirus, the New York Times has managed to find various ways of tracking the virus and laying it out for readers. One of those ways is by looking at cities that could be in trouble soon due to a rapid increase in cases.
They compiled a list of metro areas across the U.S. where cases are rising the fastest and as of now, eight of the top 20 are within Wisconsin.
In fact, Wisconsin had cities come in at No. 1 and No. 3. The city with the fastest rising cases across the country is officially La Crosse, with 626 active cases.
According to the New York Times, LaCrosse only had 130 active cases a week ago. On average, the city is seeing 41.5 new cases daily which is the 25th worst in the country.
Whitewater comes in at No. 3 on the list with 406 active cases. Also on the list is Green Bay, Beaver Dam, Oshkosh, Platteville, Appleton, and Madison.
One commonality among these cities is a majority of them have a UW school within the city. La Crosse has UW-La Crosse, then there's UW-Whitewater, UW-Green Bay, UW-Platteville, UW-Madison, and UW-Oshkosh. It’s not clear whether the rise in cases is related to an influx of students.
