Concerned parents meet to discuss speeding...

Posted

GREEN BAY, Wis.- The library at Aldo Leopold School was filled Monday night with dozens of people looking for answers, but some leaving angrier when they left than when they came.

"I don't feel like the officials went far enough to come up with solutions," said concerned parent and Green Bay resident, Brian Schroeder.

State officials, traffic engineers, law enforcement and community members are brainstorming ways to tackle speeding problems on Monroe Street near the elementary school.

"Time and time again it's been proven that tickets necessarily don't solve a problem, it's education, " said Captain John Laux of the Green Bay Police Department.

The concern of speeding in the area came to a head a few weeks ago when a dog was hit and killed just a few weeks ago near the school.

Green Bay democratic representative Eric Genrich was in charge of Monday night's meeting.  He collected comment cards hoping to reach a solution based on public input.

"We're hoping to move forward with some solutions after the discussion tonight," said Representative Genrich.

One thing many agreed on was the problem of pedestrian safety is a cultural one and to change that will take time and education.

Green Bay Police say they'll be adding two traffic officers to the force as of January 1.  They're hoping by having two officers dedicated to just traffic problems, it will help cut down on speeding near the school and other places.
