Some people are voicing concern over a new bill in the state legislature that would reduce the amount of time shelters are required to hold stray animals.
Currently, they must stay seven days, but the proposal would cut it down to four days. Critics worry that's not enough time to allow owners to track down their missing pets and fear those animals may be adopted out or euthanized.
Leaders at the Bay Area Humane Society say they don't euthanize animals, and they support the legislation.
"We're looking at this more as a way of preventing illness and stress in animals. It saves taxpayer dollars," said Executive Director Marlene Walsh.
The state says it's unsure at this time of what the cost savings would be.
