KAUKAUNA, Wis. — A boy was pronounced dead at a local hospital after firefighters pulled him from a pond Tuesday night, the Kaukauna Fire Department says.

Firefighters responded to a pond located on the grounds of Lamplighter Apartments around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday. Rescue crews learned that four brothers, ages 7, 11, 11 and 12 came to the retention pond to release a turtle.

According to the fire department, at one point at least three of the boys were in the pond. One of the boys was on the bank of the pond and observed two of his brothers struggling in the pond. The fire department says one of the boys called for help and a couple of apartment residents came to the boy's aid.

One of the residents jumped into the pond and pulled out two boys. The third boy, the 12-year-old, could not be found. The fire department says rescue crews searched the pond and were able to recover the boy, who was then taken to a local hospital. After performing life-saving procedures, the fire department says the boy was pronounced dead.

The Kaukauna Fire Department believes the child was in the pond for about 1½ to 2 hours before being recovered. This case is still under investigation.
