Community Heals After Tragic Accident

Posted
At a busy intersection in Kaukauna, a memorial grows.

The community is remembering 12-year-old Justin Johnson who was hit and killed by a school bus while walking home from River View Middle School.

"At this point it's still an active investigation.  We're still talking to witnesses that stopped to render aid and we're interviewing people that drove by and witnessed the crash,' said Kaukauna Police Department lieutenant, Jamie Graff.

Wednesday officers were testing the cross walk at Second Street and Crooks Avenue to make sure the lights work correctly.

Officers say only one crossing guard is stationed near the middle school and it's behind the school.  However one mother, Betty Grady of Kaukauna says her daughter was almost hit on her way to school Tuesday morning, just hours before Johnson was killed.  Grady says one crossing guard just isn't enough.

"I, myself will be out here helping people cross whether people want me to or not," said Grady.

Police say parents are working together to come up with a crossing guard plan.

The school bus driver who hit and killed Johnson works for Kobussen Ltd. who is the bus provider for the Kaukauna Area School District.  That bus driver has been put on leave pending this investigation.
