The Community Blood Center has called for all available donors to schedule a platelet donation appointment to help fill an urgent need in South Florida.
Widespread power outages, road closures and gas shortages have forced platelet donors in Florida to evacuate, and there are not enough new donations to meet the need that exists, The Community Blood Center said Wednesday.
Platelets are vital to treating trauma victims and those with cancer. They have a shelf life of just five days, Community Blood Center representatives said.
